Genre theory
There are lots of different of important aspects of genre theory, the different aspects allow the audience to recognize the genre as well as the codes and conventions of the genre. Having genre allows film makers to order each film as well as have a basic guide to what may be used in the film however genres can be changed because of different aspects, Richard Maltby states “Genres are flexible, subject to a constant process of change and adaptation. Because different audiences will use different genres in different ways at different times, its boundaries can never be rigidly defined” this means that trough time directors and studios have been changing genres to meet the target audience of their film, the changing of the genre allow the studios to meet target audiences easier as they are able to change it to meet current times or future perception. To support this Yvonne Tasker refers genre to “it is not the case that the genres were pure in classic Hollywood, but their status in New Hollywood is perhaps more uncertain and fragment” this means that there is a thin line between the different types of genres as there codes and conventions are getting closer and closer.
However with the changes of genre studios are able to make a huge profit because they are meeting the audience’s needs, Rayner at al states “Producers are said to like the concept of genre because they can exploit a winning formula and minimize taking risks.” This means that studios can exploit genres to meet their needs as well as make a profit at the same time therefore allowing them to create more films, in addition Rayner et al says “the concept of genre also helps institutions budget and plan their finances more accurately and helps them promote new products” therefore genre also helps studios keep track of their finance as well as using it in the right place.
However there are some disadvtaages to having set genres, one of them being that each director has to follow guide-lines therefore no creative aspects can be shown within the films or TV shows, in addition another disadvatage is that audiance member may become confused on what type of genre that the film or TV show is trying to portray. Another disadvatage is that films and TV shows will becometo predictable for the views therefore they will stop watching them.
I believe that genre theory is important to the film and TV industry this is because it allows studios to label there genres so the can correctly promote the film or show as well as it also allows them to keep their finances in check however with the thin line between the different genres there can be a risk of not getting the genre codes and conventions are getting confused
