Editing decisions
I used different techniques in my short film to show different aspects of the film, especially to help me out line the different positive and negative realities in the film for the audience to understand. Below is a table of what editing techniques i have used and why.
Tint
I used the tint at the beginning of the short film as well as at the points where the main character seemed to be in a ‘ghost’ reality. I chose this because it shows that that it is a negative diegesis, especially in contrast with the other editing elements. The tint I used was a blue one to also give a cold atmospheric look. I have done this so the audience can tell that this is the negative side of the diegesis.
Black and white
Within my film there are a number of flashbacks, to show this to the audience of my film I edited them so they where black and white, this also connotes that it is a past event therefore making sure that the audience are aware of the different time realties in the film
Dip to black
I have used the different dip’s to show weither that the plot is moving into a negative or positive reality. The dip to black shows that the plot is moving into a negative realty such as the ‘ghost’ one. I decided on the black dip as it connotes a dark and negative outlook on the realty.
Dip to white
I used the dip to white to show a positive outlook on the film especially as the shots that are after are either the ‘heavenly’ (over exposed) or the flashbacks (black and white), this is because I want the audience to understand that there are the different realities and that there are positive ones.
Over-exposed
I used this technique to show that there is a supernatural heavenly look on the film due to that at the end of the film the character chose to go to heaven.
I over exposed two different sections in the film; a shot at the beginning of the film as it will foreshadow that something is going to happen to the character and then a selection of shots at the end to show that the character has moved on to a more ‘heavenly’ experience.
